Three hours a day, I'll never get back...
« Thread started on: Apr 26th, 2007, 4:20pm »

For 30 years I commuted 1/2 an hour each way from home to Manassas to work. At the time, I thought that was horrendous. When I retired in 2002 and realized that my family and I couldn't live the lifestyle to which we had become accustomed without me going back to work, I acquired a job in Chantilly, Virginia. I figured it would take an extra half hour tops. Well, it averages an hour and a half each way... sometimes more.

One of my pet peeves... they call it the fast lane or passing late because you are supposed to be able to drive faster than the traffic in the right lane. It never ceases to amaze me when I get behind someone crusing at 55 mph or less in the fast lane, regardless of the posted speed limit! 9 times out of 10, they are on a cell phone without a hands free head set. Please use the right lane for this crap... I'm too old for this shit.

Ponderous, simply ponderous....

After an extremely pleasent visit to my daughter/granddaughter in Atlanta this past weekend... when I reached Petersburg, VA, I was immediately thrust back into stress mode... the large electronic sign over I-85 told me that I-95 North was closed at Exit 75 in Richmond. Wanting to avoid this, I took I-295... since it was dinner time and I'm fat, the WIC (woman in charge) and I stopped in Hopewell for dinner... the 5 mile trip took over 45 minutes and I still don't know why. We had a nice dinner and WIC decided to drive the remainder of the way home. She wanted to take I-95 even though I warned her of the closing. We get to Exit 75, and sure enough I-95 is closed. We follow the other traffic onto I-64 (Exit 75) and head back to I-295... simple, right? Wrong... when we get to I-295, there is a huge State Police presence and construction crew working near the on ramp... getting on I-295 took about 1/2 an hour... so, you say, that should be it, right? Wrong... we get to where I-295 hits I-95 and there is construction there. They close the two left lanes and we crawl, for almost an hour, 2 miles... what BONEHEAD decided to put construction crews on every road in Richmond simultaneously? Damn dumb move if you ask me... welcome back to reality...

To the herd of gluteus maximus in BMWs I followed in this morning... you want to view the scenery? you want to talk on your cell? you want to play with your wife (or girlfriend)'s leg? I got no problem with that... just don't do it in the fast lane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For the love of God! If you want to drive the speed limit or BELOW, PLEASE ride in your single file lemming line, talking on your cell phones, putting on make up, or whatever it is you're doing, in the RIGHT lane! It's just RUDE!

Nothing has gotten better, I am just numb to it at this point... I stagger my arrival and departure times at work to avoid it, but there is still some rush hour fall out. Here lately, I have been able to make more progress in the right lane than in the left... I guess these people think they're in England or something.

Was it gold/tan car drives stupid day?

In spite of my late departure this morning... there were a TON of people in gold or dark tan vehicles this morning that were just driving like they were having a stroke... made no difference the model; Lexus, Ford, Mercedes, Kia... they were all gold or a dark tan! Over half were on cell phones... two or three were reading SOMETHING that was laid across the wheel... at highway speeds! I've had to deal with 4 inches of water in my basement as part of the Great Mother's Day Flood of '08 and have been spending until the wee hours cleaning the mess up and drying out. I figured I'd miss most of the stupid drivers... however, I was wrong... nothing is fool proof if the fool is determined enough.

Is it THAT important?

I guess I've just become apathetic, complacent with my daily commute... not much has annoyed me enough in the past few months to warrant entry here. However, this morning...

I was cruising along minding my own business in the left lane. Numerous cars were on the right and I was passing them. The nearest car behind me in the left lane was at least a mile back. I noticed someone in sitting in the turnaround/median waiting to merge in. When I had about 5 car lengths to go before I reached their position, they decided to merge into the left lane and drive 25 mph! This phenomenon not only happened once this morning, but THREE times! Is it that important you get out in front of me? Ponderous...

What's the deal with fog lights?

If there is no fog, or fog like conditions, why must you use your fog lights? Think we could put a moratorium on fog lights unless there is fog, heavy rain, or the like? PLEASE?

...and then he woke up...

It dawned on me that I used to write my ramblings here... now I update FaceBook and have ignored this... damn it man! I shall attempt to do better, but it would really be nice if I had more people sign up and participate on here... I'm just sayin'...

This morning was a regular smorgasbord of the things I've posted here... we had large trucks, driving below the speed limit in the left lane... we had people doing the same in their cars talking on their cell phones... just the regular fecal matter that I encounter on my commute every day... this was all topped off by having to follow a young man on a crotch rocket the last 5 miles of my commute. Normally you see young people on these kind of "motorcycles" and they are weaving in and out of traffic going 4 times the speed limit. Not this young man... he faithfully obeyed the speed limit and drove like he had some sense... however, this was extremely annoying... to me at least. I guess I'm just a grumpy old man...

1. I overslept this morning... ok... that should be the rule rather than the exception... I just don't do mornings.

2. If you are in a drive through line you should be required to order stuff as is off the menu. This morning, I let the milk go bad and couldn't have my cereal... so I stopped by Mickey D's... there was a... "lady" from West Virginia in front of me. It took her forever to order... then she had to have a discussion with the guy taking the money... then a change in order and discussion when she went to pick it up... 5 minutes is forever in a drive through... order your food, pay for it, pick it up... a 30 second process at best.

3. Why I'm still annoyed with this is beyond me... it's been happening forever and I really should be numb to it by now. 1st a tractor trailer is in the left lane at a light... there is a steady line of traffic in the right lane. The light turns green... there is nothing to do but follow the tractor trailer until he decides to meander over to the right lane... then we have some young girl in a silver sports car... cruising about 45 in the left lane just talking up a storm on her cell... THEN some walking rectum in a blue RAV4 does a strict 54 mph in the left lane. When it gets to a point where I can move over to the right and get around him... he speeds up... I fall back in behind him and he resumes his 54 mph... THEN, there is "construction" closing the left lane at a major intersection. After 20 minutes of stop and go... I get to where the "construction" is supposed to be... all I see are three guys in hard hats standing in the left lane with some blueprints... the flashing signs are up... the cones are out... and these nimrods are having a design meeting in the left lane...

There has to be a better way.

Normally, when I complain about my personal hell, my commute; 3 hours a day I'll never get back, I bitch about people on their cell phones, trucks driving under the speed limit in the left lane, and all kinds of incourteous, ignorant drivers. This morning, I was making a turn from a 4 way stop. As I arrived at the intersection, a big Home Depot truck passed in front of me. As I made the turn, I noticed he was stopped dead in the road. I looked around him and saw there was no traffic in front of him. As I prepared to salute him, as I am normally want to do, I noticed a terrapin trying to get across the road. In this day of everyone rushing around and looking out for themselves, it was refreshing to see this guy stop and let an innocent creature cross the road.
